Orthodontic FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that focuses on how teeth, jaws, and the bite fit together. Using braces, clear aligners, and other appliances, orthodontists gently guide teeth into better positions. The goal is not only a beautiful smile, but also a healthier bite that makes chewing, speaking, and cleaning your teeth easier.
Do I need to be referred by a Dentist?
No, you don't need a referral. Many patients come to us directly when they're interested in braces or aligners. However, dentists sometimes notice bite issues early and recommend an orthodontic visit. Either way, you can schedule a consultation anytime.
What age should I start orthodontics?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a checkup by age 7. That doesn't mean treatment will start right away—often we just monitor growth until the right time. Adults of any age can benefit too, since teeth can be moved as long as they're healthy.
Treatment Questions
How long does treatment take?
Treatment time depends on the complexity of your bite and your goals. Simple cases may take as little as 6–12 months, while more involved cases can take 18–30 months. On average, most people wear braces or aligners for about 18–24 months.
Invisalign vs Braces
Both options can create excellent results:
• Braces are fixed to your teeth and work efficiently for all types of bite problems.
• Invisalign (or clear aligners) are removable, nearly invisible, and great for patients who want flexibility and comfort.
Your orthodontist will recommend what works best for your specific case.
Should I brush or floss differently?
Yes, just a little. With braces, you'll need to brush and floss more carefully to clean around brackets and wires. We'll show you special tools like floss threaders or water flossers that make it easier. If you're wearing clear aligners, you'll remove them to brush and floss normally, but it's important to also clean your aligners daily.
Financial Questions
How much will it cost?
Costs vary depending on the type of treatment (braces vs aligners) and how complex your case is. At your consultation, we'll provide a personalized estimate. We also offer payment plans to make treatment affordable.
Will my dental insurance cover it?
Yes. We'll check with your insurance provider before starting, so you'll know exactly what portion they'll cover and what your out-of-pocket cost will be.
Will you run a credit check?
No credit check is needed for our in-office payment plans. We keep financing simple and flexible so you can focus on your smile, not paperwork.
